If you ever dare to walk behind the never ending construction hellscape that is the George R. Brown, you’ll find a lovely little park that is full of origination. The Discovery Green park is one of Houston’s often overlooked treasures. It is home to fanciful sculptures, antique shopping, playgrounds, kayaking/ice skating, bands, picnics, dog-watching, people watching, and occasionally a free movie screening. It is also home to two lovely restaurants named The Grove and The Lake House.

High Rise Heaven

It should be pointed out that Discovery Green was not payed for with tax payer’s money, rather it is the result of many years of successful fundraising and generous donors. This week we won’t be doing a scavenger hunt or playing a game, we’ll be taking a walking tour of each donated section of Discovery Green and learning more about the generous people/companies that made this urban oasis a dream come true.

I was going to write my own walking tour...since I usually write all of my own material, but turns out Discovery Green has already beaten me to the punch! The link for the official Discovery Green walking tour is at the bottom of the page.

The Enchanted Promenade

Audience: Children/Adults, stroller friendly, dog friendly

Price: Free!

Parking: There are plenty of parking options around Discovery Green but none of them are free, unless you can find an open meter on Sunday (metered parking is always free on Sunday!).

Here are your options:

  • Metered parking - good luck finding an open meter

  • Surface parking - there are quite a few lots especially around Minute Maid Park

  • Garage parking - almost every high rise in the part of downtown has paid garage parking, there is also a garage under Discovery Green

Or you can take METRORail to the Convention District stop...I personally think this is the easiest option as it drops you off a block from the park and you don’t have to fight traffic.

The Magnificent George R. Brown
